I've always loved teaching and helping others. So much so that I'm actually training to become a secondary school (high school) teacher right now.

This means that I enjoy helping beginners get started which is why I'm making these tutorials.
An Introduction To Digital Music Creation
Become A Composer! Part 1: Baby Steps!
More will follow.

I've structured them as simply as I could, giving only the essentials to what I believe is the foundation for a beginner to hit the ground running. My goal is to help newbies understand from the start that there are lots of things we take for granted when we make music that, if you understand them, you won't struggle so hard to get good.

Anyway, this is my way of giving back to the music and audio community.
I hope you like them.

I uploaded a new hard rock piece to Youtube just now. I LOVE how I managed to make it sound, it has a really good vibe about it.
Please, have a listen, I promise you won't regret it (and wait for the middle bit!).

I made a video for my cat who was hit by a car not too long ago.

Goodbye my little friend, we'll miss you. :'(

I got the results for my bachelor's degree. I passed with a 2.1! (that's a B in other countries)
MetalRenard, Bachelor of Arts, with Honours (open).

So that you know, I studied literature, languages and history with a view to becoming either a primary school teacher (5 to 11 year olds) or a secondary school teacher ("high school"). I'll be teaching French and Spanish, it seems.

So I've finally released my album!
You can listen to the whole thing here:

It's taken 2 years to finish but it was worth it. I'm very proud of the end result.
Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Delura, that incredible animated sci-fi series I've just recently started working on with Ryan from Tanadrine Studios has started a Kickstarter fundraising campaign.

Any help spreading the word would be tremendously appreciated. In fact, Speck will express this love for us in this hilarious short:

So I did it, I made a song for the Dreams of Splendor contest and it's right here:

I truly believe this is everything I can give, it has detailed orchestration, rich tones in the piano and brass, epic solos and some real "Feel Good" moments.

This is actually the first piece of music I have written on my new PC! I got a really powerful machine to replace my old and crappy one (it used to die if I loaded up more than about 10 instruments, whereas this one... well it could run this track 3 times and not even begin choke! 16 gigs of RAM and an i7 processor do that, y'know!).
All that freedom really inspired me and this piece was born - an expression of creative freedom all the way.

I hope you love it as much as I do, I'm very proud of it.

Thanks for reading. :)

I hope the few of you who actually follow me on here have a lovely holiday period (even if you're not celebrating, and even if you're not religious).

I've been working my ass off on this album and it is very near completion at last. :3
More news soon!

"Only Shadows Touch" is the album's title, but it has a very deep meaning.
It starts with the fact that we never actually touch anything... Bare with me on this, it gets a bit nerdy before becoming poetic!

We are made up of particles that interact with each other through fields (magnetism, gravity...) so when you hold your loved one's hand, you're not actually touching. The atoms are repulsing each other and so you feel the pressure, but your bodies never actually touch.
Now take this further and you can use it as a real world story idea - that there are so many things that get between us.

There's war, there's hatred, unrequited love, actual distance, death, understanding (or lack thereof)... And this is what this album explores.

Every song deals with one aspect of this idea, and woven throughout the whole is a story seen from 9 different perspectives. Each song is a different view and they all explore these people's own experiences, lives and how the events of the story affect them. This doesn't mean all the songs are sad, maybe one of the characters likes spending time alone!

When I release this concept album I'll also make a video about it on Youtube to explain all the songs, the ideas and the story that connects them.

I hope this spikes your interest in the album!

I thought I'd use this space to talk about about the ups and downs of taking on a big project like making an entire heavy metal album, and collaborating with singers from around the world to get it done. Consider this more the first of many public diary entries, a mix of thoughts and information.

Here are some demos so you know if it's worth reading about or not! http://soundcloud.com/metalrenard/only-shadows-t ouch-more-recent

Some of you may know that I'd been working on a full length independent album release when I decided I needed to get some vocals on there. So a year ago I got in touch with a few people and now we're in the last 2 months of production! Needless to say, I've learnt a lot and changed a lot since this project started, but it's been a real journey.

I had originally hoped to release in March of this year but we smashed that date and now we're aiming for 20th December. Mostly this is due to not having ideal conditions for recording vocals - all of us are busy people, I was a full time student, one of the other singers is too, and the other guys have jobs and families. I learnt that you can't sacrifice quality for speed - if you want to get the best out of everyone you work with you can't put them under pressure.

Well that's enough rambling for now, more on the subject later!
