The piece was actually inspired by a rather dystopian view of the things I was taught growing up, as well as all sorts of human rights abuses I'd read about and sometimes witnessed.
It has a real "classic" feel to it, not just because of the pixelart.
Yes, I know what you mean. I don't know why that is. Perhaps because sky islands were featured a lot in Japanese rpgs. Probably because Laputa Castle in the Sky by Studio Ghibli (inspired by Gulivers Travels) popularized it. I took some inspiration from that. The clouds and the sky also look like something that could appear in classic games or animations.
